New equipment helping communities take action across Cornwall

01.04.26

Over recent weeks, Clean Cornwall has been out across Cornwall delivering new litter picking equipment to support volunteers, community groups, coastal organisations and businesses taking action to tackle litter in their local areas.

As part of the Blue Litter Project, we were pleased to welcome Tiger Lilly Boat Trips and Seahorse Boat Trips back to the project as they prepare for another busy season in St Ives. New equipment including telescopic poles, nets, hooks, hand-held scales and a trolley has been provided to help crews safely recover litter and ghost gear from Cornwall's coastal waters.

Boat owner Andy highlighted the challenge of retrieving discarded fishing nets and other ghost gear, which can be heavy, tangled and difficult to remove without the right equipment. Supporting those already working on and around the water is a key part of the Blue Litter Project, helping us remove litter while building a clearer picture of where it is coming from and how it can be prevented.

We also delivered specialist equipment to Newquay Water Sports Centre, who have joined the growing network of organisations helping to record and remove marine litter. Their involvement will provide valuable insights into the waste and plastic pollution affecting Cornwall's coastline and seas.

Meanwhile, our new Pubs as Hubs initiative continues to expand. During Falmouth Harbour's Open Day, we delivered two new litter picking hubs to support their environmental work and make equipment freely available to staff, volunteers and visitors. While there, we also learned more about the harbour's wider sustainability initiatives, including the introduction of innovative Reef Float systems designed to reduce marine pollution and support healthier harbour environments.

Further inland, we were happy to provide Lostwithiel Scout Group with new Waterhaul litter picking kits, helping equip the next generation of environmental champions as they continue their efforts to keep their local community clean and cared for.

These projects are all part of a shared goal, making it easier for people to take practical action, whether they're on the water, by the coast or in their local community. Together, these partnerships are helping create a cleaner, healthier Cornwall for everyone.

We would like to thank Cornwall National Landscape, Beach Guardian and all of our project partners whose support and generosity help make initiatives like these possible.
