Access For All
At Clean Cornwall, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to take part in caring for their local environment.
For many people, traditional litter picking equipment, uneven terrain and physical barriers can make volunteering difficult or impossible. Access for All was created to help remove those barriers and make environmental action more inclusive, welcoming and accessible across Cornwall.
By providing specialist equipment and working alongside community groups, volunteers and accessibility partners, we are helping more people connect with nature, support their local communities and take part in activities that make a real difference.
Why Access for All?
Spending time outdoors and taking part in community activities can have huge benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing. However, many environmental volunteering opportunities are not designed with accessibility in mind.
We wanted to change that.
Access for All was developed to ensure that people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can take part in litter picking and environmental action safely, comfortably and confidently.
Whether someone has reduced mobility, uses a wheelchair, experiences limited reach or grip strength, or simply needs equipment adapted to their needs, we believe there should be opportunities for everyone to get involved.
The campaign builds on years of experience supporting community litter picking groups across Cornwall and recognises that inclusion should be at the heart of environmental action.
Through the campaign, Clean Cornwall has invested in a range of specialist equipment designed to support a wide variety of needs and abilities.
Equipment available includes:
All-terrain wheelchairs
All-terrain walkers
Extra-long litter pickers
Extendable litter pickers
Lightweight litter pickers
Recycled ocean plastic litter pickers
Magnetic litter pickers
Wheeled collection bins
Bin hoops
Reusable collection bags
Beach litter sieves
Litter picking trolleys
This equipment is available to community groups, organisations, schools and volunteers across Cornwall, helping more people participate in local clean-up activities.
One of the projects that helped shape this work was the Access Cornwall Beach Clean.
The event brought together volunteers with a range of abilities to take part in a community beach clean designed with accessibility at its core.
Specialist equipment and support enabled participants to access areas that would otherwise have been difficult to reach, demonstrating that environmental action can be inclusive, enjoyable and meaningful for everyone.
The success of the event highlighted both the demand for accessible volunteering opportunities and the importance of providing the right equipment and support to make participation possible.
It reinforced a simple message: everyone should have the opportunity to care for the places they love.
