Clean Cornwall September Spruce Up - 18th to 26th September 2010

The purpose of the Clean Cornwall September Spruce Up is to establish a programme of litter picking and related activity across Cornwall to:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of the impact of litter
  • Recognise the achievements of existing anti litter efforts
  • Encourage local ownership of the problem by individual communities
  • Promote a sense of local pride and celebrate Cornwall's special environment.

What

Clean Cornwall Week is when anyone with a passion to keep Cornwall clean gets together to collect litter on our beaches, countryside, roads, towns and villages.

Our target is to promote 300 events across Cornwall.

A calendar of events showing what events is now available on the right of this page.

Please contact us and let us know what you can do to make a difference!

When

Clean Cornwall Week takes place twice a year – in the spring and again at the end of the summer.

The weeks are all about raising awareness of the problem of litter in Cornwall and the impact that it has on our lives.  It's not only a great opportunity for like minded people to "do their bit" but it also highlights the fantastic work which is already being done by individuals and communities across Cornwall.

Who

Anybody can join in Clean Cornwall Week – all you need is a love of our county and a passion to keep it looking beautiful! Whether you are a local business, community group, group of friends or an interested individual you can all do your bit. Join an organised litter-pick activity or why not arrange your own!

We believe that Cornwall is a special place and we want to keep it that way!

CLEAN CORNWALL IN ACTION

Hints and tips on organising a litter clean up.

If you would like to organise a litter clean up in your area, you may like to think about the following guidelines:

Plan ahead!

  • Select an area where litter is a problem and approach the landowner to get permission for the clean up.
  • Select a date
  • Contact the council about removing the rubbish your group collects, you will also need to ask how to store the waste safely if they cannot pick it up immediately.
  • The council should also be able to provide equipment for the clean up, such as sacks, litter picking gadgets, wheelbarrows and gloves.
  • Ask the council if they can provide facilities for recycling items found on the litter clean up such as cans and plastic bottles.
  • Advertise for volunteers stating the meeting point, start/ finish time and clothing to wear. Put up posters, send a press release to the local papers.
  • Contact other local community groups for support.
  • Prepare the itinerary for the day
  • Think about refreshments, food and toilet provision.
  • Ensure there will be a first aider present, first aid kits and antibacterial hand wipes, you could also contact St Johns Ambulance for larger events
  • Prepare a detailed risk assessment prior to the event (see below)

On the day:

  • Be prepared to adapt to the conditions
  • Health and safety briefing, including information on how to use any equipment and what to avoid, meeting points and finish time.
  • Information on where to place the collected litter, it may be a good idea to have a map of the site/ route.
  • Ensure there is sufficient supervision for young/vulnerable participants
  • Ensure the group will be considerate to wildlife and other users of the area
  • Ensure there are good communication links, ie mobile or public telephone.

After the event:

  • Check with the council the rubbish has been collected.
  • Publicise the events success, reporting the quantity of rubbish collected, supported by before and after photos

Please also refer to the Encams document for more details on organisation:

Health and Safety

Health and Safety at the events arranged for the Clean Cornwall Week is very important.

The Cornwall Litter Partnership is insured with Zurich Municipal, the limit of liability for any one incident is £5million. Please note that this insurance cover only refers to recognised Clean Cornwall Week activities which have carried out the required Health & Safety Criteria.

Any queries regarding this insurance should be addressed to Sandra Verran at Cornwall County Council, telephone 01872 323231 or e-mail sverran@cornwall.gov.uk.

Risk assessments and other helpful documents are available on the right of this page.

When organising a group it is important that the health and safety of the group is paramount. To properly manage the event, risk assessments will need to be carried out and acted upon. Prior to the event you must undertake a comprehensive risk assessment. The document below has been prepared to make this process as easy as possible.

Please read through the different risks and control measures listed, where a risk is listed that is relevant to your event please mark which control measures will be used to mitigate the risk. This form is not exhaustive; if a risk or control measure is not listed please add it to the form.
